Advanced Physical Therapy Launches Community Outreach Program for Anchorage High School Students to Learn the Ins and Outs of Being an Athletic Trainer
Anchorage, AK -- September 28, 2005 -- This fall, Advanced Physical Therapy is proud to offer free athletic trainer seminars to Anchorage high school students. The primary goal of this program is to teach fundamental skills in sports first aid/athletic training and to expose students to multiple career opportunities in the field of sports medicine. "Programs like this exist all over the Lower 48. A lot of students are interested in knowing the basics of athletic training, like taping, massage, and detection of serious injuries, and we felt that this was a way we could give back to the community of Anchorage" said Barbara Taylor, who is heading up the program for Advanced Physical Therapy. Each session focuses on different topics such as shoulders, ankles, wrists/hands, and fractures. Two-hour seminars are offered at Advanced Physical Therapy approximately every other week.
Taylor continues to approach career counselors, coaches, and students at high schools all over Anchorage. Students from Chugiak, West, East, Service, Dimond, South and Bartlett have attended seminars, as well as some from charter and private schools. In addition to the core topics of athletic training, the Advanced Physical Therapy Student Athletic Training Program has featured guest speakers on topics like massage, occupational therapy, and personal training. Field Trips have also been offered to professional-level training facilities around Anchorage, including those of the Anchorage Aces.
Advanced Physical Therapy is eager to see the program grow. They are currently discussing ideas such as a summer training camp to offer more detailed instruction and more hands-on “in the field” opportunities for students to see the techniques used.
