Diagnosing
the type of headache a patient is experiencing is the first
step in effectively treating it. There are several common types
of headaches, including:
- Migraines
- Cluster headaches
- Tension headaches
- Cervicogenic headaches
Poor posture and upper back stiffness are often the cause of tension headaches. Loss of motion in the neck joints or weak neck muscles, such as frequently seen after whiplash or motor vehicle accidents, is the major cause of headache and neck pain (also called cervicogenic headache). Patients often suffer from more than one type of headache, and symptoms can be very similar. However, each type of headache responds best to a particular treatment* Treatment may include:
- Evaluation of postural, joint and muscular dysfunction
- Manual therapy to correct joint and muscular dysfunction
- Stabilization skills
- Education on posture and body mechanics
- Pacing and self-management skills
- Relaxation techniques
*Tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches respond well to physical therapy.
